Schmal comes to Boston College from Georgia, where he played his high school ball for The Westminster Schools. There, he was a teammate of fellow 2014 Eagles recruit Cam Seward, whose own feature is coming this weekend.
Sam Schmal was an all-conference offensive lineman for Westminster, and this got him on the radars of several schools, whether north, south, east, or west. Ultimately, Boston College gave him the offer that he accepted on June 24, 2013.
To get into Boston College, academic performance is a requirement, but Schmal’s on-the-field test scores showed a 5.10 40 time and a 29″ vertical, amongst other things.
For now, the Eagles offensive line seems to be set, so how does Schmal factor into their plans?

.Sam Schmal’s arrival timing at Boston College is actually good. At present, the Eagles offensive line is the most veteran unit on the team, with four seniors set to start out of five positions in 2014. The right tackle position is open thanks to the departure of Ian White, but there are other offensive linemen who have waited for their shot to start, and Florida transfer Ian Silberman figures to be one of the four seniors.
A redshirt for Schmal seems very likely as the 2014 season approaches. When he’s available to play in 2015, there will be a number of open positions for which he will compete.
