The defense has lost players from last season, as tends to happen every year on every team, but what the defense as a whole needs is more certainty. The linebackers are generally speaking a known quantity on the Boston College Eagles, but the defensive line is almost all new in terms of starters, and even that aforementioned linebacking corps will be starting two new players this season.
In the secondary, all four starters from last season are back, and this is the only unit on the entire team where all the 2013 starters are still here in 2014.
Now you see why they will need to step up, but also because of the numbers. The Eagles were 113th last season in passing defense and they gave up 47 plays of at least 20 yards, tied for 97th in FBS. While they will need to be an example for the rest of the defense, they need to get better. With most of the starters as seniors, it’s now or never.
