This shouldn’t take long, since there aren’t many.
Boston College is down to three players at the quarterback position following natural attrition and transfer departures. The irony of this state of affairs is that about a year ago at this time, the conventional wisdom suggested that the Eagles’ quarterback situation would be very hazy. After all, Chase Rettig was gone, Darius Wade and James Walsh were freshmen (true or redshirt), and Josh Bordner was not seen as a realistic option. Instead, with several weeks to go until the season opener, it is quite clear.
2014 Boston College Quarterbacks Preview: Losses
• Josh Bordner, converted to WR
• Austin Lommen, off roster
• Mack Lowrie, transfer
• Chase Rettig, graduation (starting QB, 2010-13)
• Christian Suntrup, reportedly out of football
• James Walsh, transfer
It is worth noting that none of Boston College’s 2014 quarterbacks were on the roster last season; there has been a complete turnover.
2014 Boston College Quarterbacks Preview: Tyler Murphy, The Starter
Our Preview: Tyler Murphy, QB
Murphy did not transfer to Boston College for his final year of eligibility to ride the pine, to borrow a baseball phrase.
He came to Boston College to start, and it has been known that this will be his job since April.
Tyler Murphy did not play much for the Gators until last season, filling in for the injured Jeff Driskel before getting injured himself. It was a tough year for Florida and Murphy, but then again, Boston College is not nearly the pressure environment that The Swamp is.
Like virtually every quarterback recruited by Steve Addazio, Murphy is a dual-threat quarterback who fits well with the Eagles offense. The early returns in camp on Murphy seem to be good and he is excited to be at Boston College. As far as the sort of performance we can expect, the Eagles will have a player who will keep drives going by any means necessary, and who should also prove to be a competent, competitive option.
