ACC Football Week 13: You’re Welcome, Georgia Tech
The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets are ACC Coastal champions after the Duke Blue Devils went down in flames on their home field on Thursday night to the North Carolina Tar Heels.
This game was 14-0 UNC before Duke even know what hit them, especially given that the Heels scored two touchdowns in 45 seconds in the first quarter. The Blue Devils would get one of those scores back after an Anthony Boone touchdown pass to Isaac Blakeney, but the Heels hit Duke again before the end of the quarter, and again before the end of the half to take a 28-7 lead into the locker room.
The news did not get any better for Duke in the second half, who were down 38-7 before they started to go on a bit of a run. By then, it was far too late.
Duke’s defense had been one of their strong points this season, while North Carolina’s was their most major liability. Their roles were transposed on Thursday night, as UNC put up almost 600 yards on the Blue Devils defense, and Duke had only 378. Both teams turned the ball over three times in what was a rout on the scoreboard and an ugly game in general.
North Carolina has gotten themselves to a bowl, while Duke’s dream of consecutive division titles went up in smoke. At least it was a laugher from the start and not a gut-wrencher.
