WF Offense vs. BC Defense: Stat Analysis

That’s right: Wake’s longest play of the year has been all of 36 yards. Otherwise, those are some ghastly numbers for the Demon Deacons, who are literally last in FBS in several of the categories on the previous page, only breaking out of the 100s a few times.

We are always clear to say that statistics do not always tell the story, but when they’re near or at the bottom of the former Division I-A almost across the board, you’re probably onto something.

On the other hand, Boston College’s defense has been fine as we proceed more than half-way through the 2014 season. Maybe not as impressive as some of the elite defenses in the nation, but they have held their own against some tough opposition. They do need improvement in some areas, but unquestionably, they were were stars of the show last weekend against Clemson.

WF Offense vs. BC Defense: Key Matchup

QB John Wolford vs. Boston College secondary. Wake Forest has a poor offensive line and that has contributed to their run game being the worst in the nation and with only one touchdown all year. (Consider also that Wolford is getting sacked all the time.) If Bobby’s little brother John, who is going to play this weekend, and his receivers cannot get anything going against the Eagles pass defense, it is going to be a very long afternoon for Wake Forest.

WF Offense vs. BC Defense: Names to Know

  • Wake senior RB Orville Reynolds leads the team with 143 yards.
  • Wake freshman QB John Wolford is 124-for-208 with 1,135 yards, 7 TD, and 12 INT.
  • Wake grad WR EJ Scott leads the Deacs with 315 yards and 4 TD catches.
  • BC junior CB Justin Simmons leads the Eagles with 43 tackles this year.
  • BC senior LB Josh Keyes leads in both sacks and TFL with 4.0 and 9.5, respectively.
  • BC senior DE Brian Mihalik has come on strong lately with 17 tackles and 3.5 sacks.

WF Offense vs. BC Defense: Final Analysis

What’s really to analyze here? Boston College cannot take this opponent lightly, and if they don’t, they will have a good afternoon. Wake will need to show us something none of us have seen in order to stay competitive against the Eagles defense.
