So far this season, Boston College Eagles fans have ended up with more questions than answers. Today, on 5 Big Questions Thursday, we add even more to the pile.

I cannot guarantee Eagles fans will like the answers to many, just as they have doubtlessly not enjoyed what they have seen on the field this year.

5. Why is the spread (ND -24.5) so big?

Because Notre Dame averages about 34 points per game and BC averages 18, because against three teams with winning records, BC has lost by an average of 23, and because Notre Dame has pounded bad teams for the most part this year.

In those three games against Clemson, Virginia Tech, and Florida State — teams with winning records who are now ranked — the Eagles have played exactly one good half of football. Even the Hokie game, which saw a BC lead at the half, turned into what essentially amounted to a blowout (VT won by 16, but gave up on a final touchdown with 2nd and goal at the 5 yard line when the game was in the bag).

The bookies are thinking blowout here, and can you blame them?
