Virginia 66, BC 49: Eagles Hang Tough, But Fall to Cavaliers

AUTHOR: | IN: BC Basketball | COMMENTS: No Comments

UVA beats BC basketball 1.26.12

Definitely closer than the score.

On Thursday night in Charlottesville, Virginia, the Boston College Eagles were defeated by the #19 Virginia Cavaliers, 66-49. The Eagles have fallen to 7-13 (2-4).

This game was close most of the way through, as the Eagles got behind a couple of times in the first three quarters or so of the contest but fought their way back. Continue reading this post »

Afternoon Quickie: Womens’ Teams Crushed; BC-UVA Preview

AUTHOR: | IN: BC Basketball | COMMENTS: No Comments

Afternoon quickie

Wednesday night was entirely forgettable for the #4 women’s hockey team and the women’s basketball team.

We begin with hockey, mostly because we expect a better effort than the one Eagles fans heard about. The ladies went down the road to play Boston University in a Hockey East game, and sorry to say, they got bludgeoned to the tune of a 6-0 defeat at the hands of the Terriers. It was their first shutout loss on the road since 2010. Continue reading this post »

2012 NFL Mock Drafts, Installment 1: No Top 10 Kuechly

AUTHOR: | IN: BC Football | COMMENTS: No Comments

NFL Draft Roger GoodellThe Scouting Combine does not begin for another month, but it’s never too early to figure out where our Eagles might land in April’s NFL Draft.

Currently, there are eight players on ESPN’s list, but like last year, we know that their fact-checking is suspect. On it, the Worldwide Leader has Luke Kuechly, Donnie Fletcher, Max Holloway, Nate Richman, Ifeanyi Momah, and Mark Spinney. They also list Montel Harris and Kaleb Ramsey, both of whom appear to be returning to BC next year. Continue reading this post »

BC Hockey’s Dropoff: Is Offense the Issue?

AUTHOR: | IN: BC Hockey | COMMENTS: No Comments

Downward TrendBoston College Eagles hockey fans are not used to seeing their team struggle, but over the last eight games, that is precisely what they have done. Since their first-half finale against UMass-Lowell, the Eagles have gone 2-5-1 and that has cost them standing in the most recent polls. Boston College is now ranked eighth in the nation according to the USA Today poll, in a season where they had been in the top five for the duration and even spent a few weeks at #1.

Yesterday, we evaluated the problems at the goaltending position and saw some of the inconsistent results BC has been getting. We also know that defense ties into that, and if your blue line isn’t holding up their end of the bargain that it will obviously make the goalie’s job more difficult (though with the exception of the Saturday Maine game, BC’s penalty kill, for example, has been outstanding). Today, we assess how much of a problem the offense has been and what blame, if any, we can attribute to them for BC winning just two of their last eight games. Continue reading this post »

Whose Goalie Job Is It, Anyway?

AUTHOR: | IN: BC Hockey | COMMENTS: No Comments

Whose LineThis is not a goaltending controversy: it’s a goaltending dilemma.

Boston College hockey coach Jerry York has gone to three goalies this year, and it would not appear that any have been satisfactory. All three of BC’s goalies have been benched at least once during the season, and inconsistent results have been the reason.

Indeed, as the Eagles are mired in a stretch where they’ve won two games out of their last eight and look sure to drop in the weekly rankings, they could definitely use stable production in net (as well as outside, but that’s for later). Who is the man who can best provide it? Continue reading this post »

Maine 7, BC 4: Eagles Swept Away by Black Bears

AUTHOR: | IN: BC Hockey | COMMENTS: No Comments

Maine beats BC hockey 1.21.12

If it is not yet time to be concerned about the long-term fate of the Eagles this season, it will be coming soon.

In Orono, Maine on Saturday afternoon, the Maine Black Bears defeated the #4 Boston College Eagles men’s hockey team, 7-4. For Maine, it is a two-game sweep of the weekend series, and BC has fallen to 14-10-1. The Eagles are now tied for second place with Merrimack and are four points behind Boston University for first in Hockey East.

The latest defeat for Boston College, who are now 2-5-1 in their last eight games, started with the Eagles getting off to a fast start. Continue reading this post »

Wake Forest 71, BC 56: Eagles Overwhelmed by Deacs

Wake Forest beats BC basketball

Not only is Boston College’s brief ACC flare over, it’s nowhere to be seen.

On Saturday afternoon, Boston College men’s basketball was defeated by the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, 71-56, at Conte Forum. The Eagles have fallen to 7-12 (2-3) on the season, and it was Wake’s first ACC road win under Jeff Bzdelik.

From start to finish, the Eagles played a bad game; there is no way to sugarcoat it. As a matter of fact, Boston College never led at any point, nor did they ever even tie the game after Wake got out to a 2-0 lead. It is easy to see why, as BC shot 28.6% and missed nine of ten three-pointers in the first half. Continue reading this post »

Maine 4, BC 3: Eagles Dumped in OT by Black Bears

Maine beats BC hockey

Are the Eagles in trouble?

On Friday night in Orono, Maine, the #4 Boston College Eagles men’s ice hockey team lost to the Maine Black Bears in overtime, 4-3. The loss has dropped BC to 14-9-1 on the season, and they are two points behind BU for the Hockey East lead.

The Eagles got on the board first as Bill Arnold found the net for a 4-on-3 power play goal, his 12th score of the season, just 3:20 into the contest (Hayes and Dumoulin assisted). Maine hit back about five minutes later, however, with Adam Shemansky scoring his seventh goal (Beattie and Hegarty assisted). Chris Kreider had appeared to score a goal to give the Eagles a 2-0 advantage, but it was waved off, and shortly thereafter, Maine tied the game. Continue reading this post »

Inaugural ACC Roundtable: State of Our Basketball Programs

AUTHOR: | IN: ACC-related | COMMENTS: No Comments

ACC Roundtable

Now that Fansided is growing its ACC network, the other editors and I have been able to collaborate on our first ACC roundtable discussion. This time, the topic of discussion was ACC basketball, what we’ve seen so far, and what we expect going forward.

What’s the current state of your school’s men’s basketball program?

Soaring to Glory: Bad but getting better. Boston College has a roster of almost two-thirds freshmen, and it shows. When the season began, they were clearly out of their element and in general, it’s not hard to notice that they’re thin/non-muscular/not very strong. As a result, during non-conference play, the Eagles were getting railroaded nightly by such fine teams as UMass and Holy Cross. A few fans were manning the lifeboats and declaring the whole freshman class a bust. Continue reading this post »

NC State 76, BC 62: Eagles Throttled by Wolfpack

AUTHOR: | IN: BC Basketball | COMMENTS: No Comments

NC State beats BC basketball

Brief win streak over.

On Thursday night in Raleigh, the Boston College Eagles men’s basketball team went on the road and came back with a big loss, 76-62, to NC State. The Eagles have fallen to 7-11 (2-2) and they have been defeated soundly in both conference road games so far.

The game started poorly for the Eagles and, after a brief surge where they tied the game, the wheels flew off. Boston College had tied the game, 21-21, on a three-pointer by Dennis Clifford, but thereafter, NC State went on a 24-7 run to close out the half. Continue reading this post »
