2014 Top 5 Best Boston College Sports Moments — #5

Boston College men and women sweep the Beanpot; February 10 and 11

For just the second time ever, both the Boston College men’s and women’s hockey teams won the Beanpot in the same season in 2014. Those events happened on consecutive nights, with the men claiming the trophy on Monday and the ladies on Tuesday.

It was the men’s fifth win in a row, and the ladies’ first since 2011.

The men’s final at the TD Garden on February 10 was an exciting game against the Northeastern Huskies. With a fast pace, hard hits, and at times ferocious intensity, along with a bit of chippy play, the contest was 1-1 entering the third period. The teams missed chance after chance with the defense and goaltending standing strong.

It was not until 5:30 left in regulation that Boston College went ahead for good. Patrick Brown redirected the puck into the net to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead, but even at that, the tension was high. Johnny Gaudreau’s empty-netter with 1:16 sealed it, and for good measure, Brown added his second goal 26 seconds later.

Like bosses, when the Eagles posed for their team photo, they each held up the number of fingers representing how many Beanpot victories they experienced.

On the women’s side, Corinne Boyles had a brilliant game to lead Boston College to a 3-0 shutout win. Coincidentally, the Eagles women also beat Northeastern to claim their title.

At that point in their seasons, the two programs combined for a record of 43-9-6.
