ACC Football Week 13: Avert Your Eyes
In one of the most hideous Atlantic Coast Conference football games ever forged in the hottest crucibles of Hell, Wake Forest defeated Virginia Tech, 6-3 in double overtime.
The first quarter passed and neither team had scored. And then the second. Then the third. Then the fourth.
This game went into overtime at 0-0, mostly a function of bad offense and somewhat opportunistic defense — but mostly bad offense.
Both teams would kick field goals in the first overtime, but in the second, Virginia Tech quarterback Michael Brewer took a sack on 3rd & 9, and Joey Slye missed a 53-yard field goal. Wake’s Mike Weaver made a 39 yarder to win it.
It’s just as well that Slye missed, because this thing might have gone to five overtimes with neither team cracking double digits. Even with two overtimes, only one team barely got over 250 yards of total offense — and that team lost.
Dave Clawson and Wake Forest got their first ACC victory of the season, which is good news for them, but on the other sideline, it is looking grim. Virginia Tech upset a ranked Duke team last week, but could not find the end zone even once on Saturday. What could have been a win to get them to a bowl turned into a horrible loss.
One has to wonder this point if this was the final nail in the coffin for Frank Beamer’s tenure at Virginia Tech. He could be getting a title reassignment to “special advisor to the athletic director” or similar very soon.
