ACC Football Week 11: Gutter Ball

The Syracuse Orange had a shot at Duke in the fourth quarter, but the Orange will not be bowling this season following a late meltdown in a 27-10 defeat at the Carrier Dome.

This is one of those games where the final score does not adequately capture the spirit of the contest. Entering the fourth quarter, this was a tie game, and it was not until a punt return touchdown by Duke that the Blue Devils started to pull away. Syracuse made some huge mistakes late, like giving up the punt return, going for it on 4th & 4 at their own 31 (at the time, they were down a touchdown with about 11 minutes to go), and an Austin Wilson interception.

Duke is a better team than Syracuse and that much is obvious, but this was a different example than the Boston College game of why not to give good teams opportunities. Most of the time, they will not waste them.

Syracuse has now lost seven out of their last eight, falling to 3-7 on the season. With that, there is now essentially a zero percent chance that Senior Day at Boston College will be a meaningful game. Meanwhile, David Cutcliffe and Duke are doing it again, sitting at 8-1 on the season.
