UNC Asheville selects new baseball coach (Citizen-Times, Keith Jarrett)

Boston College Eagles baseball has lost its pitching coach to the UNC Asheville Bulldogs out of the Big South Conference.

Scott Friedholm, an assistant under Mike Gambino since his arrival as the team’s head coach, was hired away to lead Asheville’s perpetually-sagging baseball program, which has not had a winning season in almost three decades of existence.

The problem is, it only feels the program Friedholm just left hasn’t had one in about that long, either.

This is a nice stepping-stone job for Friedholm, whom we can assume will want to start making a name for himself as a baseball coach in his own right. Expectations surrounding the Ashville baseball program are going to be low, so any success at all will get him noticed, and hopefully a bigger payday elsewhere.

In case anyone needed reminding, this opens up Boston College’s pitching coach position. Carrying a full coaching staff has been problematic for the Eagles, so hopefully finding a replacement for Friedholm is a solvable issue.

Congratulations are in order for Scott Friedholm, for whom we wish success.
