To the surprise of absolutely nobody at Boston College, former Eagles hockey player Johnny Gaudreau scored his first NHL goal in his first NHL game.
The setting was Sunday night in the Calgary Flames’ last game of the season, being played in Vancouver, British Columbia against the Canucks. (It’s somehow fitting that he scored his first NHL goal in a province called “BC”.)
Due to some rather questionable goaltending, the visiting Flames were already down 4-0 late in the second period, but Gaudreau, who was finding himself getting significant ice time — including on the power play and eventually on the top line — eventually parked himself in front of Vancouver’s goal. This is what happened:
Congratulations to Johnny Gaudreau, who accomplished more in one NHL game this season than some guys did playing all year. We’re proud of you and eternally grateful for all you did at Boston College.
Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait a year to get your second goal, or to get Bill Arnold his first, but this is a moment we’ll all remember.
