Boston College Eagles Football Bowl History
By Joe Micik
(12) 2000 Jeep Aloha Bowl: Another trip to Hawaii for Boston College, who got back on the winning track with a win over the Arizona State Sun Devils, 31-17. This would start the Eagles’ long winning streak.
(13) 2001 Music City Bowl: Boston College drew the Georgia Bulldogs for a second time in the postseason, and ran their record against UGA to 2-0 with a 20-16 win in Nashville. William Green’s touchdown with 4:43 left in regulation sealed the deal.
(14) 2002 Motor City Bowl: The 2002 season saw the Eagles head to Detroit, where they met the MAC’s Toledo Rockets. This produced Boston College’s most lopsided bowl result to date as they took a 51-25 win. The Eagles had won three consecutive bowl games for the first time in program history. Brian St. Pierre was the game’s MVP, going 25-for-35 with 342 yards and three touchdowns.
(15) 2003 San Francisco Bowl: This one was a San Francisco treat (sorry, Rice-a-Roni) for the Eagles as they took out the Colorado State Rams, 35-21, for their fourth bowl win in a row. Derrick Knight scored three rushing touchdowns in the victory, nearly breaking what was at the time the single-season rushing record.
(16) 2004 Continental Tire Bowl: In Boston College’s final year in the Big East, they faced a future ACC foe in the North Carolina Tar Heels. The Eagles got the better of this one with a 37-24 win, making it five bowl wins in five seasons. Notably, quarterback Paul Peterson broke his leg in the middle of the game while Matt Ryan closed out the win.
(17) 2005 MPC Computers Bowl: In what essentially amounted to a Boise State home game, the Eagles were one of the few teams during this era to beat the Broncos on the smurf turf. Boston College and Matt Ryan survived to win the game, 27-21, to stretch it to six bowl wins in a row. The Eagles had led 27-21 but staved off a furious Boise State comeback with a Ryan Glasper pick late in the fourth quarter.
(18) 2006 Meineke Car Care Bowl: Few Boston College fans can forget the miracle ending to this game, the only good memory we have of Frank Spaziani as a head coach. The Navy Midshipmen fumbled away the game, with Steve Aponavicius sneaking in the game-winning field goal with time expiring in a 25-24 win. Seven bowl wins in a row.
(19) 2007 Champs Sports Bowl: Boston College capped off their best season since 1984 with a 24-21 win over the Michigan State Spartans in Matt Ryan’s final game. This made it eight-straight bowl wins and helped the Eagles finish the season ranked #10 in the nation.
(20) 2008 Music City Bowl: The luck was due to run out eventually, and it did in Nashville as the Eagles gave up the lead with 3:26 to go and never came back. The Vanderbilt Commodores escaped with a 16-14 win, breaking Boston College’s win streak.
(21) 2009 Emerald Bowl: The first of the Eagles’ consecutive bowl games in San Francisco was a dud against Pete Carroll (coaching his final game) and the USC Trojans. Rich Gunnell broke the receiving record, but the Trojans won, 24-13.
(22) [2010 season] 2011 Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl: Boston College’s most recent bowl game was another loss, this time to Colin Kaepernick and the Nevada Wolf Pack in a 20-13 game. The Eagles’ offense was again as bad as advertised (183 total yards) as the program began a full-on decline.
(23) 2013 AdvoCare V100 Bowl: Will the Eagles get their first bowl win in six years? Let’s find out together.
