2013 Boston College Football Unit Preview: Secondary
By Joe Micik
The Backups (preseason depth chart)
Al Louis-Jean, sophomore, LC
ALJ was one of the biggest recruiting gets during the Spaz era, but so far, injuries have stalled out his Boston College playing career. He played in ten games in 2011, none in 2012, and is back into the two-deep in 2013. Luckily, he’s only a sophomore and still has several years of eligibility remaining. Louis-Jean can have a significant impact if healthy.
Dominique Williams, junior, SS
Williams has made 20 appearances so far in maroon and gold, coming up with seven tackles last season. He was not all that noticeable last year, playing only about 100 snaps, but it’s a new year.
Justin Simmons, sophomore, FS
Simmons is the tallest DB on the roster at 6-3. He started a majority of the 12 games in which he played last season in the secondary, most of which was at free safety. Simmons recorded 52 tackles and an interception in so doing. He’s probably decent enough to be starting somewhere, but regardless, he will get his snaps.
CJ Jones, junior, RC
Jones has made two starts as an Eagle, both of which were last year. He was in the process of coming back from a knee injury suffered in 2011, in which that true sophomore season of his got bagged and, thanks to a medical redshirt, 2012 was his second sophomore season. As a junior, expect to see him get his fair share of snaps, but his impact remains in question.
Off The Two-Deep
Zach Wolfe, junior
Wolfe is a walk-on who has only played on the scout team so far. That’s probably a good guess this year as well.
Ted Davenport, junior
Davenport got his scholarship about a year ago and played in all 12 games last season. Expect to see him coming off of the bench here and there.
James McCaffrey, junior
McCaffrey also played in all 12 games last season and even cracked the two-deep at one point. One would think he’ll have an equal or greater impact on special teams this season, where he returned a few kicks.
John Johnson, freshman | Atem Ntantang, freshman | Matt Milano, freshman
I would imagine someone in this group is going to redshirt, but we don’t know how Addazio does things yet. Many of the current two-deep guys played as true freshmen, for what it’s worth.
