We now switch to the defensive side on the unit previews as we take a look at the defensive line. Unlike its offensive counterparts, the defensive line was not the one upon which a serious reputation had been built, but even though most people would think about the Eagles as “O-Line U” rather than “Line U,” BC has had a heritage of strong line play in general. Some of the most successful periods in program history can be traced back to it.

Unfortunately, lately the Eagles have been more like “No-Line U.” The defensive line has declined especially, to the point where last year they only recorded six sacks in twelve games, coming dead last out of 124 teams in FBS. If that doesn’t signal a problem, then not much else does.

What makes it disturbing is that there are some talented guys on this line, far too talented to be one of the worst defensive lines in the nation last year. That may also be reason for a bit of hope, because there’s nowhere to go but up.

2013 BC Football Unit Preview: Defensive Line

The Starters (preseason depth chart)

Kaleb Ramsey, senior, LE

Ramsey has been at Boston College for a long time, and he owes that to injuries setting him back. In fact, he is the only current player to have played for Jeff Jagodzinski. Ramsey can still be very useful to the Eagles if he can remain healthy for one last season. Traditionally on the interior of the line, the preseason depth chart has Ramsey moving out to left end. It should be an interesting experiment if that’s what they intend to do.

Mehdi Abdesmad, junior, LT

Abdesmad came to Boston College from la belle province known for his sacking ability; he is once again in a starting role in 2013, but at a different position. The new Eagles staff is apparently moving him to the interior of the line, whereas in the past, Abdesmad was on the outside. This will also be an interesting experiment, but one has to at least credit the coaches for shaking things up.

Connor Wujciak, sophomore, RT

Wujciak may well begin this season as a starter. He started half of his ten games last season at DT, and could get the nod all season if he plays well. Wujciak was a highly-regarded recruit from a football family and given that he’s 6-3 and 300 pounds, he should be a rock on the inside of this defensive line.

Kasim Edebali, senior, RE

Edebali has been one of the more noticeable names on the defense in recent years, having played in 36 games so far (starting a majority of them). Right defensive end has been his position for quite some time so learning it won’t be an issue, but if BC’s defense gets more aggressive as we hope it might, Edebali could pick up some sacks.
