Boston College Football Countdown: 21 Days to Go
By Joe Micik
The Boston College Eagles football season starts just three weeks from today. Three. Weeks.
As the season is so close, our unit previews will begin later today.
Who Wears 21 Now
Bob DeChiara-USA TODAY Sports
Manuel Asprilla, DB, junior
Massachusetts native Manny Asprilla is entering his third season at Boston College. In his first two years, sans redshirt, Asprilla has been one of the more consistent performers. He has played in 21 games to date, starting sixteen of them. It would appear that he will remain in that role, as the current preseason depth chart lists him as the starter ahead of Al Louis-Jean.
Notables Who Wore 21
• Mike Cloud, RB, 1995-98. One of the all-time great Boston College running backs.
• Dave Zumbach, WR, 1973-76. Also a BC Varsity Club Hall of Famer.
• Razzie Smith, CB, 2006-07. Here only for his notable name.
• Trevor White, DB, 1999-2002. Appeared in 44 games in the backfield.
Respectable Effort
Boston College held Notre Dame last season to 21 points, which was the third-fewest they allowed in a game. Alabama held them to seven less than the Eagles, but scored a bunch more.
Doing It All
Chase Rettig had to take the ball himself sometimes, and his longest gain of the 2012 season was 21 yards in the finale against NC State.
Who Said The TEs Weren’t Involved
Chris Pantale caught 21 passes in his senior season. He might have gotten a few more if Steve Addazio was his coach.
Checkdowns-R-Us
RB Dave Dudeck also collected 21 passes last season.
Ground Delivery
RB Dan Conway (1976-79) scored 21 touchdowns for the Eagles during his career.
Air Delivery
Glenn Foley threw 21 touchdown passes in 1991, which is still the most touchdowns thrown by a sophomore quarterback at BC.
Oops
But in 1990, Foley threw 21 interceptions, which is the second-most for any Eagle in a single season.
Almost A Record
Darnell Campbell scored 21 touchdowns in 1993, just one short of tying Keith Barnette’s record from 1974.
You Probably Don’t Want To Be Reminded, But…
In 1999, Boston College had a 21-point fourth-quarter lead against Miami. The rest is very ugly history.
