Boston College Football Countdown: 29 Days to Go
By Joe Micik
Remember when the Boston College Eagles football countdown was in the 90s? Well, now it’s in the 20s. How about that.
Who Wears 29 Now
James McCaffrey, DB, junior
McCaffrey is a Winchester, Mass native who is entering his fourth year overall in the BC football program and third year of playing. He has so far appeared in all 24 games between his freshman and sophomore seasons, making 19 tackles on defense and even picking up a few rushing and receiving yards on minimal offensive exposure. McCaffrey does not appear on the two-deep to start the preseason, but it’s likely that if he’s uninjured, he’ll make his way into most contests.
Notables Who Wore 29
• Dominick LeGrande, SS, 2008-10. Bailed for Marshall.
• Taji Morris, CB, 2003, 2005-2007. Started in the golden Matt Ryan year of 2007.
Moving The Sticks
Boston College had a season-high in first downs last year during the Miami game with 29.
Rumblings
In the Eagles’ season finale against NC State last November, Boston College rushed 29 times; the 199 yards they got on the ground in that game was a season high.
Scores
Former Eagle quarterback Tim Hasselbeck, not to be confused with his brother, Matt, threw 29 touchdown passes in his BC career.
Scores II
Darnell Campbell, an Eagle from 1991 to 1993, scored 29 total touchdowns in his time at Boston College; that’s seventh on the all-time list.
Short Game
Last season, Nate Freese made all seven of his kicks of 29 yards or fewer.
As For The ’29 Season
The stock market crashed, and so did BC opponents. The Eagles went 7-2-1 that season, allowing just 65 points total — they even set their all-time mark for single-game interceptions that year with eight against Fordham.
