Boston College Football Countdown: 56 Days to Go

facebooktwitterreddit

The days are once again becoming shorter, just like the wait between you and the 2013 Boston College Eagles football kickoff. Our countdown now stands at 56 days.

Who Wears 56 Now

Michael Fischer, LS, freshman

Data is pretty thin on Fischer, but his BCEagles.com bio says this:

"Joined the team as a recruited walk-on in early September 2012 … served as a valuable member of the scout team."

We also happen to know that he’s a local (Wellesley) and was an offensive lineman and long snapper for St. Sebastian’s in Needham.

Notables Who Wore 56

Max Holloway, DE, 2009-11. Passed up last year of eligibility to work for the man.
Al Washington, DT, 2002-05. Now a very well-liked assistant coach at BC and accomplished recruiter.
Kevin Pearson, LB, 1987-90. 1990 team captain.
Jermaine Monk, LB, 1995-96. Brain surgery ended his BC playing days.

Disaster Averted

Boston College almost disbanded the football program in ’56. The Eagles, who played at Fenway Park at the time, got shut out by Holy Cross in their season finale, whereupon they were no longer welcome to play their games at the home of the Red Sox. Instead, a month later in January 1957, plans for Alumni Stadium were announced and it opened in September of the same year.

Obligatory Matt Ryan Reference

Matt Ryan threw 56 touchdowns in his Boston College football career, which ranks third in program history.

Hooray Defense

56 happens to be the number of tackles made by Spenser Rositano during the 2012 season (33 solo). This was sixth on the team. It’s also the number of passes the BC defense broke up last season.

(Not) Hooray Defense

In the first game of the 2012 season, BC gave up a 56-yard rush by Duke Johnson for a Miami touchdown. It was the longest run the Eagles gave up all year.
