Boston College Football Countdown: 82 Days to Go

facebooktwitterreddit

We’ve sheared off eighteen days of this Boston College Eagles football countdown and are left with 82. That’s plenty of time to get your single-game tickets if that’s what floats your boat.

Who Wears 82 Now

Jarrett Darmstatter, TE, junior

Darmstatter is a young man from whom we have not heard much in his first two playing years at Boston College. Now entering his junior season, Darmstatter has appeared in twelve games (including 11 last season) but was never in the game for more than a handful of plays on offense or special teams. He approaches 2013 still looking for his first reception as an Eagle.

Darmstatter did not finish the season on the two-deep at tight end.

Notables Who Have Worn 82

Kelvin Martin, WR, 1983-86. One of BC’s most prolific wide receivers and punt returners ever.
Pete Mitchell, TE, 1991-94. Another all-time great BC receiver; went on to long NFL career.
Robert Ellis, TE, 1997-2000. 2000 Jerry Nason Award winner.
Justin Jarvis, WR, 2006-09. Finished BC career with 791 receiving yards.

Flutie’s First Bowl

And we’re not talking about a bowl of Flutie Flakes. In 1982, Flutie and the Eagles went to the Tangerine Bowl (now the Capital One Bowl) but fell to Auburn, 33-26. The Eagles mounted a big comeback in the fourth quarter to cut a 23-point deficit to seven, but Flutie’s three touchdowns (2 pass, 1 rush) were not enough.

And Some Awards

In 1982, sophomore Doug Flutie was the ECAC Player of the Year, recognition he would get three years in a row. Also in ’82, Troy Stradford would be named ECAC Rookie of the Year.

And Some Records

From the 1982 season, Doug Flutie still retains the Boston College all-time record for passing yards in a single game: 520 against Penn State. He also holds two particular records from his second year in ’82: sophomore pass attempts (348) and sophomore yardage (2,749).

Finally, Scott Nizolek continues to hold the BC record for most passing yards in a game: 229 in that very same Penn State contest. Gerard Phelan came up just three yards shy of tying it in the Hail Flutie game in 1984. As you might imagine, the Eagles also set an all-time record for offensive yardage (656) that day against Penn State.

And A Not So Good Record

In 1982, Flutie set what was at the time a BC record for interceptions with 20. Shawn Halloran and Glenn Foley have since gotten him off the hook.

Enshrined

In ’82, Gene Goodreault, an All-American end for Boston College generations ago, was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Looking Spiffy

Spiffy Evans had a special moment at Alumni Stadium in 2012, returning a Maine punt for a touchdown. How far? You guessed it: 82 yards. It goes without saying that it was the longest punt return of the year for BC.
