On a day when Boston College Eagles football gained a new face with the commitment of kicker Mike Knoll, they also lost one on the defensive line. The Heights has reported that Max Ricci, a defensive tackle from Massachusetts who would be entering his junior season, will depart from the program.
During his number day (#98) on the Boston College football countdown, it was noted that Ricci did not appear on the spring football roster and seemed to have dropped off the face of the college football earth, but know we know why. No rationale for his departure has been made public.
Ricci made twelve appearances last season, starting two games at defensive tackle, and made 20 tackles.
His departure from the Eagles football program is notable if only that the defensive line, which is already thin and in need of a complete revitalization, is even thinner now. Despite not having been a starter, this loss chips away at whatever depth the Eagles had on the interior of the front four. Boston College will return Dominic Appiah and Kieran Borcich from the two-deep last season, while also getting Kaleb Ramsey back for one more season; the latter is somewhat of an unknown quantity in recent times because of injury problems.
This may also create opportunities for new faces to get into action. A most likely candidate to play as a true freshman, if one does at all, is DT Tevin Montgomery, who is already 295 pounds. Truman Gutapfel measured in at 250 during his recruitment; if he has added size since then, he may also become an option.
One may also choose to look at the departure optimistically, relative to BC’s recruiting:
Whatever the case may be, it would be difficult for the defensive line to get much worse than it was last year, so Ricci’s departure may prove negligible in the short-term. We wish him the best in his future endeavors.
