On Tuesday afternoon, word had come from hockey sources that Boston College hockey head coach Jerry York had found a replacement for one of the vacancies on his staff.

That one replacement is Mike Ayers, who will now join the Eagles. Ayers was most recently the goaltending coach for the USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program. Some slightly less recent alumni may also remember him as a four-year goalie for the New Hampshire Wildcats in the early 2000s.

In his time as a coach with the NTDP, Ayers worked with U-18 goalie Thatcher Demko, who is commit to Boston College. As it turns out, BC also has a goalie vacancy in the upcoming season with Parker Milner having graduated; Demko could have a leg up in the starting goalie competition when he eventually shows up at Boston College.

In recent days and weeks, Boston College hockey has seen (what we believe to be) two vacancies on staff. First was Mike Cavanaugh, who departed from Chestnut Hill to become the new head coach at Connecticut. Second was Jim Logue, a longtime assistant under York who is reportedly seeking to retire, though it has not yet been confirmed by the school. Logue, like Ayers, is a goaltending coach; Ayers coming to BC almost certainly confirms the reports of Logue’s retirement.
