Boston College Football Countdown: 95 Days to Go

facebooktwitterreddit

95 days from now, the college football season will have already started two days before, but the maroon and gold of Boston College will take to the field on Alumni Stadium for the first time in 2013. That’s a long time from now, and summer has only just unofficially begun, but just know that every day, we’re getting further away from the disappointments of the prior seasons and closer to the new pigskin dawn ahead.

Who Wears 95 Now

Greg M. Cooper-USA TODAY SportsDominic Appiah, DT, junior

Appiah started his Boston College football playing career in 2011 with a solid freshman year. In it, he set all of his current career highs, including an eight-tackle game at Notre Dame and a two-sack performance the following week against NC State.

In 2012, however, despite playing in only one fewer game, Appiah’s tackles were cut in half from 36 to just 18 in his sophomore season. By the end of the season, Max Ricci had jumped over him on the depth chart at left defensive tackle. Appiah will have to work hard at getting back into form after his sophomore slump.

Notables Who Wore 95

Chuck Gorecki, DE, 1982-85. Played three games with the other Eagles in Philadelphia.
Chris Hovan, DL, 1996-99. 1999 team captain; 1st-round pick in 2000 by Minnesota; 11-year NFL player.
Joe Nash, DT, 1978-81. Undrafted free agent who spent 15 years in Seattle; set Seahawks record at the time for 218 games played.

Getting Cloudy in ’95

1995 was Mike Cloud’s freshman year at Boston College, and to this day, he holds a freshman record for most yards per carry at 6.1. Give some credit to the men in front of him as well, because every great running back has an unsung offensive line helping him.

Disaster ’95

In what remains to this day one of the worst losses in modern Boston College football history, the 1995 Eagles lost to the Army Black Knights at Alumni Stadium, 49-7. The 2012 loss to Army at Michie Stadium was crisply-played compared to that turkey.

All of the Yardage

Despite that one game, the 1995 season (at the time) was the most prolific ever offensively. That team totaled up 4,612 yards in just 12 games, a record which was broken in 2003 by just a few dozen yards. Matt Ryan’s 2007 Eagles came up 30 yards short of tying the 1995 team.

Drafted in ’95

• Mike Mamula (Philadelphia Eagles; 1st round)
• Pete Mitchell (Miami Dolphins; 4th round)
• Stephen Boyd (Detroit Lions; 5th round)
• Mike Reed (Carolina Panthers; 7th round)
