October 6, 2012: Boston College football loses to Army for first time since 1995
This game summed up the entire year in a nutshell.
In a show of complete futility, Frank Spaziani led his team into West Point and came out with the Eagles’ first loss to the Black Knights in 17 years. This 34-31 loss was sealed in the final minute of regulation, when the defense could not hold their 31-27 lead.
More accurately, they had held Army and gotten the stop they needed, but the offense did not hold up their end of the bargain and the Eagles could not run out the clock.
With about two minutes to go, the Eagles came up with a big goal-line stand to hold their lead, but in the ensuing drive, all BC needed to do was get a first down and come out with a win. They moved the ball three yards, got a lousy punt, and gave up the game three plays later. That is all one needs to know about BC football in 2012.
Boston College, which two seasons earlier was the best run defense in the nation, was gashed repeatedly by Army’s triple option offense for an astounding 516 rushing yards.
We here have great respect for our armed forces, but this embarrassing loss took the cake.
