Boston College Baseball: Passed Ball in 10th Leads to 3-2 Eagles Loss

Sports often provide welcome respite from horrible events. From a Boston College perspective, in spite of the outcome of Tuesday’s contest against the Rhode Island Rams, they helped do just that.

The Eagles baseball team, playing its first game since the Marathon bombing just five miles down the road, fell to the visiting Rams, 3-2 in 10 innings. With the loss, Boston College is now 6-30 on the season. Rhode Island improves to 19-17 with their victory.

This one was not for lack of trying, as the Eagles kept the game tied almost the entire way and got reasonably good pitching performances from those who appeared on the mound. Starting pitcher Eric Stone allowed two earned runs in four innings of work, but until the tenth inning, five BC relievers entered and left the game without allowing a run. That winning run for Rhode Island scored in the top half of the inning as catcher Nate LaPointe allowed a passed ball, scoring Kevin Stenhouse.

Boston College baseball’s problem, as it so often is this season, has been a lack of hitting. The Eagles only scratched out four hits on Tuesday (including one extra-base hit, a double) and totaled one walk, though three were hit by a pitch. Rhode Island mashed out twelve hits on their way to a win and drew four walks, but BC pitching limited the damage effectively for most of the afternoon.

The situation for this program is bad and continuing to get worse, no matter how close of an effort this game was today. Boston College takes to the field again this upcoming weekend as they head to Winston-Salem: the Eagles will play a three-game set at Wake Forest as they search for their first ACC win of the season.
