101 Days of BC Football: Nick Clancy, #54

The 101 Days remains in the linebacking corps, but gets to focus on some experienced senior talent. Nick Clancy is that man; the senior from Plainfield, Illinois is the most tenured linebacker Boston College’s football team has.

Clancy was a member of the recruiting class of 2008, in which year he redshirted for Coach Jeff Jagodzinski’s team. He played his first year of eligibility, and all those thereafter, for Frank Spaziani from 2009 to the present. As a redshirt freshman in 2009, Clancy made ten appearances out of 13 games and made 17 tackles. Clancy recorded his first career interception in the second game of that season against Kent State. In 2010, his sophomore season, he found his way into eleven games but only made six tackles the whole year; his best game was the contest at Duke in which he posted two tackles. Last year as a junior, Clancy had his best season despite only playing in nine games. He made 19 tackles in total, recorded 1.5 tackles for a loss, broke up two passes and recovered a fumble (against UMass).

He appeared in BC’s spring football scrimmages in 2012, getting a great deal of time at linebacker. In the Jay McGillis spring game, Clancy led the team with 10 tackles while also breaking up a pass.

In spite of all of this, Clancy is still not starting. He is currently listed as the #2 “Will” linebacker behind Kevin Pierre-Louis, the guy who might well be the best player on the team right now. Just his luck I suppose, but Clancy is going to get playing time and will appear in nearly every game BC plays this season. He’s not going to get KPL time, but time nevertheless.

When he does get into games, I expect that Clancy will be a solid roleplayer as he has been in previous years. It is not unreasonable to expect that he will meet or exceed his 19 tackles from last season, as that’s a really low target, but without being the starter, much more is probably a stretch.
