101 Days of BC Football: Mike Marscovetra, #16
By Joe Micik
In 2009, with a new coaching staff and an entirely new stable of quarterbacks, some suspected that the Mike Marscovetra era at Boston College would possibly be upon us soon. With starter Dave Shinskie’s erratic play and backup Justin Tuggle not making many waves, it seemed logical that Marscovetra would get his shot.
In 2012, we know that “Marsco” never rose beyond the level of backup and did not start a since game in his first three years. Chances are he’s never going to get the opportunity to start for the Eagles, either.
Marscovetra, ostensibly the fourth-string quarterback on BC’s roster now, threw one pass — a 14-yard completion — last season and that was it. Prior to that, his last appearance was October 9, 2010, a 44-17 defeat at NC State where he came out of the bullpen for mop-up duty, so to speak. His playing time has dwindled to next to nothing and with his new position on the depth chart, it’s very unlikely that he will play another down for Boston College as quarterback.
If he had one shining moment in a BC uniform, it was in the 2010 spring game. Marscovetra “stole the show,” in my words from that afternoon, but it never translated onto the field in an actual game. Had that been the case, the quarterback situation over the previous few years might have unfolded differently, but alas.
Should Marscovetra get any playing time this year, it would probably be in garbage time. In the event that he starts a game, that would mean three quarterbacks in front of him are unable to play, which would be quite a problem in and of itself.
We’ll always have the ’10 spring game, Marsco. Godspeed.
