This is merely a retrospective, since calling it an “autopsy” is too strong of a term, despite the fact that I may have died a little inside watching BC lose eight times this year.

After completing a 4-8 season — BC’s worst in over a decade — it’s time to take the team apart piece by piece and examine what worked (not much) and what didn’t (take your pick).

Statistically speaking

It starts with the offense, and there was very, very, very little about which to rave during the 2011 season. Rant, perhaps, but not rave. For the fourth-straight year, Eagles fans got to watch an offense in the bottom quarter of the nation in total yardage and was largely unable to convert on much of any opportunities.

The changes seen from last year to this year are negligible. Considering that BC was a terrible offensive team last year, however, this is not good news.

Boston College also does not score big points against FBS teams. The Eagles will begin the 2012 season having gone 27-straight FBS games without scoring 30 points; the last time was a 31-point performance against Central Michigan on October 31, 2009.

I have said it before and will say it again: what we saw out of the BC offense this year was NOT a “blip.” For several years now, the Eagles have been trending downward and are now holding steady near the bottom of the nation.
