Boston College at Notre Dame: 5 Big Questions

2. How would a third-straight loss to Notre Dame impact the BC fanbase?

It would be mostly adverse, but I’m being careful not to overstate it.

To some, this game is just a non-conference contest that means little more than bragging rights. To others, particularly older generations, this game is “the” game. Those fans will take particular notice of a loss here, especially if it’s a bad one, while the rest will see this as just another loss in a season of losses.

I think if you really want to get down to it, you have to ask “how many people of influence (meaning boosters, Flynn Fund donors, etc.) are paying attention to this game?” I suspect enough will, and if the Eagles lose a non-competitive game to Notre Dame to make us 3-8, a few people more people are going to be displeased with the direction of the program than before. Since Boston College’s image is something of paramount importance to this type of supporter of Eagles athletics, and with there being no doubt that a third straight loss to Notre Dame (especially if they get creamed) would harm the image, one wonders who else will take notice of the downward spiral of the football program should the Eagles fall on Saturday.
