Meet Your New Basketball Eagles: John Cain Carney

The next featured freshman is someone who was born locally but played in Steve Donahue country (and I’m not talking about Ithaca). John Cain Carney (#13) was born in Cambridge, but spent his high school days at the Shipley School in Bryn Mawr, PA.

Cain Carney was a second-team all-star player last season for Shipley, and ended up with 6.7 points per game, 9.9 rebounds per game, and 3 assists per game. In his junior year, he managed 8.5 points per game, 7.9 rebounds per game, 2.4 blocks per game, and 2 assists per game. He also spent some time playing AAU basketball in the Philadelphia area.

Just this past week, he made a (very) brief appearance in the exhibition game against AIC, but did not stay in the game long enough to even record one minute.

There is very, very little available on him, so based upon the facts I have at my disposal, I will conclude thusly:

• Cain Carney will be a bench player at BC. He does not appear to have the statistics to make him a go-to scoring guy, but he can be very useful in other areas.
• Since we know absolutely zero about his defending, we don’t know what he’ll bring, but if he’s good at it, being a defensive specialist sort of player is a possibility.
• A 6-7 stature and a weight of 218 pounds would explain his good rebounding at high school, because I’m guessing he could probably get to the ball first his fair share of times.

Cain Carney probably isn’t going to get a ton of minutes when you have a host of other players that figure to get more, but it does appear that he is capable of making spot contributions to BC when he is in the game.
