Re-Evaluating BC Football’s Second-Half Schedule

It’s not just that Boston College is 1-5: it’s that Boston College is 1-5 through what was arguably the easier of two halves of their season.

No wonder, then, that many BC fans are waving the white flag on the second half and piling on the current regime, lamenting what could be a 1-11 disaster of a season.

Is that realistic to expect, however? Today, we examine the six remaining games and how our perceptions about it have or have not changed.

What we thought about this game in the offseason

Virginia Tech will be a tough out, regardless of whether or not they are ranked, and this is one that could get away even if BC is off to a nice start. We don’t know what the Hokies have offensively without Tyrod Taylor and Ryan Williams, but they’re well-coached and usually don’t play a bad game against us.

Furthermore, Frank Spaziani is 0-2 against the Hokies and his teams have been outscored 67-14.

What we think about it now

The Hokies are currently the only ranked team left on BC’s slate, and the Eagles aren’t really getting any better. Sure, there are players playing harder, but the result isn’t changing and the coaches (still) aren’t adjusting.

Virginia Tech doesn’t look as good as they were last year — they won four cupcake games in a row, got smashed by Clemson, and squeaked by Miami — but at least they didn’t lose to an FCS team this time, and thankfully for us, neither have we. They are, as most teams in AQ conferences are, better than us.

Boston College win probability

Very low. Boston College has not beaten anybody good in years, and they are probably not starting at Lane Stadium against a superior opponent. Further, going back to the 2008 ACC Championship Game, BC has lost three in a row to the Hokies.
