Superconference apocalypse…not now
By Joe Micik
Not yet.
"The SEC Presidents and Chancellors met today and reaffirmed our satisfaction with the present 12 institutional alignment. We recognize, however, that future conditions may make it advantageous to expand the number of institutions in the league. We discussed criteria and process associated with expansion. No action was taken with respect to any institution including Texas A&M."
Pretty awkward situation for A&M: if you’re trying to dump your girlfriend for someone better, you better make sure the other one is interested first.
The superconference apocalypse may come and Boston College may be left in an unholy, supersized ACC-Big East hybrid leftovers conference — but not today.
The question is: When the SEC talks about “future conditions may make it advantageous to expand,” when is the future? This expansion issue once again turned out to be a big dud, but eventually, it will happen — possibly sooner than we realize — and Boston College still needs to be ready to look out for itself.
