The top five worst BC sports moments of 2010-2011
By Joe Micik
#1: March 25, 2011: Men’s hockey loses to Colorado College
The Boston College men’s hockey team were the defending national champions, winners of three out of four Beanpots and three out of four Hockey East tournaments. The senior class was amongst the most celebrated that Boston College had ever seen, and goalie John Muse had never lost an NCAA Tournament game.
Enter Colorado College, one of the last teams in the field of 16, in the first round of the 2011 NCAA Tournament.
The Eagles took the lead mere seconds into the game, but the Tigers struck back, and hard. Before we knew it, the season was over.
Colorado College won 8-4 and in a brutal surprise attack, Boston College’s dreams of repeating as national champions were annihilated in front of our eyes. It was an inauspicious end to tremendous Boston College careers from our seniors and those who left to pursue professional hockey opportunities.
Some will probably argue that this shouldn’t be #1, but I disagree. This hockey team was the one, out of all BC teams, that we expect to win and win often. It would have been a tough road to a repeat for sure, but not only did most of us not envision BC losing this game, but I don’t think you’d have found anyone claiming that CC would score eight goals. This loss was a gut-punch, slap in the face, and an ice skate to the happy zone. It doesn’t take away from all of the good things this team was able to accomplish, but when it comes to shock, disbelief, and disappointment, watching BC hockey go supernova this night took the cake.
