The top five BC sports moments of 2010-2011
By Joe Micik
#1: September 4, 2010: Mark Herzlich returns
No question at all that Mark Herzlich’s return to competitive football was the best moment for Boston College sports in 2010-2011. A year before, this moment was in serious doubt as a result of his Ewing’s sarcoma diagnosis and the expected toll that it would take on his physical condition. Still, there were those of us who kept the faith that we would be there cheering for him when he led the Eagles out of the tunnel in his first game back.
On September 4, 2010, Herzlich did just that, having beaten the odds and returned to playing the sport he loves at the collegiate level. It doesn’t matter to me that there were questions about his effectiveness as a player, or that the 32 NFL franchises all passed on what would have been a big draft steal: what matters is that he won, cancer lost, all of Boston College and college football was better for it. In what was otherwise a frustrating football season, Herzlich’s return (about which we have all spoken with the utmost of positivity) was the one moment to which we can all point and acknowledge that it was truly great to see.
