Sloppy Saturday: BC lacrosse and baseball both lose
By Joe Micik
And for good measure, the softball team got mercy-ruled by UNC on Friday in the ACC Tournament.
This weekend hasn’t been going well so far for the Eagles. On Thursday, before it all began, things were looking up as men’s basketball had secured the commitment of new recruit Patrick Heckmann. On Friday, however, came the softball season’s conclusion when they lost 9-0 to North Carolina. The ladies’ record at the conclusion of their year is 15-31 (5-13), so obviously there’s not much hope for an NCAA bid.
Speaking of NCAA bids, Saturday was not the best day for the women’s lacrosse team. Well, alright, I shouldn’t be so harsh. After all, Northwestern (BC’s opponent) are #2 in the nation, had home-field advantage, and were expected to win. That is precisely what happened, as the Wildcats prevailed by an 11-8 score in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Still, if nothing else, they made that tournament for the first time in their program’s history, so we shouldn’t take away from their accomplishments, even though yesterday did not go their way.
Like the softball team, another BC club that doesn’t have to worry about an NCAA Tournament tilt is the baseball team. Having been officially eliminated from the ACC Tournament picture on Friday when Wake Forest beat Duke, BC took to the field against LeMoyne in a non-conference matchup and lost, 4-2. The men are 16-30 (7-19) and are playing out the string with five games to go. They will face LeMoyne again today at 11am.
