Eagles lose two of three to #1 Cavaliers, plus ACC standings

Things aside from Mark Herzlich’s NFL draft snub happened this weekend in BC sports (man, I feel bad for Anthony Castonzo – all of us were so annoyed over Mark not getting drafted that Castonzo’s success was overshadowed. I won’t feel bad for him for too long, though, because he will certainly be wealthy soon, if the NFL pulls its collective head out of its rear). I guess it’s also a sign of how flat interest in our baseball program is when I have to weave in a paragraph about BC football to hook the reader.

The Boston College baseball team, whom I haven’t discussed very much lately due to their downslide, lost two out of three this weekend at home against the top-ranked Virginia Cavaliers. Note how they lost two, not three. The Eagles finally managed to win a game against a ranked team this season, and probably the one they were least expected to beat. That victory came on Saturday afternoon when the Eagles won in 11 innings. Saturday’s walk-off win, along with the Baseball Beanpot victory last week, have been two bright spots in an otherwise dismal season. Boston College’s record is now 16-26 (7-16).

Winning one of those games means that a game which had been previously penciled into the loss column (actually, more like engraved) went their way. As for how it impacts the conference standings, here you go:

1. Virginia (20-4, 1st in Coastal)
2. Florida State (16-8, 1st in Atlantic)
3. Georgia Tech (18-6, 2nd in Coastal)
4. Miami (16-7, 3rd in Coastal)
5. North Carolina (13-8, 4th in Coastal)
6. Clemson (13-11, 2nd in Atlantic)
7. NC State (11-13, 3rd in Atlantic)
8. Virginia Tech (9-15, 5th in Coastal)
===========================
9. Wake Forest (7-14, 4th in Atlantic)
10. Boston College (7-16, 5th in Atlantic)
T-11. Duke (5-19, 6th in Coastal)
T-11. Maryland (5-19, 6th in Atlantic)

No matter how you slice it, even with that single win over Virginia, BC still has their work cut out for them if they want to make the ACC Tournament in a few weeks. All the Eagles have left on their schedule are series against Wake Forest and NC State. At present, the Eagles are a game and a half behind Virginia Tech (over whom they have the tie-breaker). BC would probably have to, at a minimum, win both of those remaining series, especially the Wake Forest one, and hope that the Hokies lose. It’s possible, but it will be a struggle since they have two teams to leap.
