Piecing together the second scrimmage

Whoever said Twitter isn’t a useful tool?

Since there was only one write-up with regards to the second football scrimmage yesterday, basically all we have to go off of are that and tweets from the scene.

Here is my summary of events from yesterday, quarterbacks only, based upon what I have read: All four quarterbacks experienced some level of difficulty. It doesn’t get more succinct than that, and it’s the truth. Whereas in the first scrimmage we heard some very good things about how our QBs did, this time, things didn’t go as smoothly.

Since I don’t believe in plagiarism, let me first state that you can check out the websites of the providers of these excerpts at the BC Heights sports page and Eagle Action.

Things started off just fine for the Eagles in this second scrimmage, with Chase Rettig picking up where he left off:

"HeightsSports Rettig marches the offense down the field 74 yards before the drive stalls on a couple of stale dive plays. Passing game impressive."

Things didn’t stay quite so rosy, however:

"HeightsSports Rettig much less impressive on the second drive. Overthrows Swigert on a fly and Momah on a comeback during a 3 and out."

It was no better for the backups:

"HeightsSports Marscovetra’s first pass: lofts it way too high for Swigert on a streak, picked by Louis-Jean."

The good news to take from it is that one of our defensive stars did well:

"EAHoffses Albert Louis-Jean with an INT off of Mike Marscovetra. ALJ playing well against the 2nd team offense"

Our student newspaper wasn’t impressed by Marscovetra:

"HeightsSports Marsco has to work on decision making. Threw a needles[s] jump ball in the middle of the end zone on 1st down from the 17."

And not to be forgotten, Uncle Dave:

"HeightsSports Shinskie had Momah for a second on a post in the end zone, but it was swatted by Okoroha. Settles for a Freese FG."

From what I would also gather, Josh Bordner, a guy who has been pretty low on the depth chart to this point, had a good day. Even then, he threw an interception (I would hope that all of the picks say more for our defense than poor quarterback play, but I know it’s probably both). He could be playing his way back into the backup QB conversation, but I think we will certainly have a better feel for it next Saturday.

There are two things with regards to the quarterback situation that I can surmise based upon the two scrimmages (and past performance) so far: that Chase Rettig is the starting quarterback and Mike Marscovetra will probably not be the backup. Rettig has not been without his growing pains, but I state the obvious when I say that we need to see improvement from him in this upcoming season. Any quarterback can have a bad day, so it’ll be important for Chase to bounce back next week when there’s a crowd watching. As for Marscovetra, when last year’s spring game ended, it was all downhill from there. When he got his chances last year, he showed us very little and is still exhibiting signs of making bad decisions with the football. This is not to say that Shinskie wasn’t also unimpressive in the past, but he’s probably slightly ahead at this point.

There was more written about Montel Harris, who got his first touches of the spring, but it would appear that his day was fairly quiet.
