Baseball home opener delayed — again

First, our field wasn’t ready for the Hokies and all hands had to ship down to Kingston, RI. This weekend, a messy snowstorm (which wasn’t much more than rain down where I live, just saying) up in the Boston area has impacted the upcoming series against Miami. Tomorrow’s game at 3pm will go on as planned, followed by a Sunday doubleheader beginning at an undetermined time but probably around 11am.

This isn’t the first time that atmospheric conditions have screwed with this baseball team in 2011. In the middle of March, the Eagles were slated to play a game against Bryant, but that was postponed as well due to inclement weather. I would also say that the Eagles were fortunate to have gotten in the Holy Cross game in March as the weather was bad that day (alright, maybe not so fortunate, since they lost).

We can’t help where our school is, and we can’t help the weather, but this is the problem with spring baseball in the north. If you take a look at BC’s yearly schedules for this sport (as well as softball), you will see that the first month and a half to two months of the season are played as far away from Boston as you can get, for obvious reasons. The big issue with all of this, however, is that it is unattractive to prospective Boston College baseball recruits, especially ones who aren’t originally from this region. There are other things that can be said about facility issues as well, but I’ll omit them since I truly have no desire to bag on the baseball program.

Sadly, there is nothing that can be done about the weather, but things can be done about the facilities to make BC a more attractive place for baseball recruits. Thankfully, this is expected to be taken care of thanks to BC’s Institutional Master Plan, with a new baseball field (with lights) going onto Brighton Campus. Hopefully, this field will also have a superior drainage system. We could be waiting on that one for a while yet, however. In the meantime, we’ll just have to put up with both the unimpressive field and the snow, rain, sleet, and other wintertime phenomena that impact the Boston area. If only BC had the budget for a retractable roof. (They don’t.)
