Eagles self-destruct in St. Louis as hockey season ends

This is not a headline I expected to write, and certainly not tonight.

The #4 seed Colorado College Tigers blew the doors off of the defending national champion Boston College Eagles on Friday night by an 8-4 score, shocking the top seed and ending a sensational run by the BC senior class.

Boston College went ahead of Colorado College only 19 seconds into the game on a Jimmy Hayes goal from point-blank range. It was all downhill from there for the Eagles, as the Tigers found themselves ahead 4-1 at the first intermission. The Eagles would get a goal back to make it 4-2, but Colorado College strung together three more in succession to push their lead to a smothering 7-2, and they wouldn’t look back, though BC and CC scored a few more goals in garbage time. The Tigers will face Michigan tomorrow in the West Regional Final.

I feel sorry for our great senior class who, after a great run which included two national championships, are going out with a whimper. They deserved a better ending than what they got tonight, but you have to give credit to Colorado College. They played much, much better than the Eagles and had intensity. The Eagles looked completely out of sync for almost the entire game. The whole team seemed like they were not interested or mentally prepared, and that goes especially for outgoing goalie John Muse, who got crushed by the Tigers’ offense all night (until he got pulled, that is).

It was certainly not easy seeing the Eagles getting pantsed on national television after all of the good things that they had done this year. I thought that we had as good a shot as anyone to win the national title, but it was simply not to be.

Now we BC fans are left with spring sports. Expect a lot more baseball and football spring game articles (because let’s face it, we got nothin’).
