BC basketball: Season (basically) over, plus a selection mini-rant

Boston College basketball 2010-2011 officially burned out on Friday, March 11, 2011, in Greensboro, North Carolina due to the cumulative effect of a series of self-inflicted injuries sustained from November until March.

The season began with great promise on November 12, 2010, but suffered a catastrophic blow on November 18 against Yale. It would recover somewhat, most notably in a triumph over Texas A&M and two wins over Virginia Tech, but along the way, took blows from Rhode Island, Harvard, and Miami (twice). Its ultimate demise was caused by a spectacular faceplant against the Clemson Tigers on national television. All of the media bracketologists pulled the plug shortly thereafter.

The 2010-2011 season is survived by the hope that (a) the new recruits will be good and (b) Reggie Jackson will return for his senior year. It is also survived by the 75 BC students who attended home games.

Visitors may see what little depressing bit remains of this season at Conte Forum during the National Invitation Tournament (there will be plenty of good seats to be had). In lieu of flowers, send a charitable donation to the Flynn Fund.

Speaking only for myself, I think I could accept BC being left out of the Tournament; indeed, I expected it. But there were a host of teams with 14 losses and otherwise unworthy teams (UAB? Really?) who got in. Meanwhile, teams like Virginia Tech, St. Mary’s, and Colorado were also left out.

There are a few possible explanations for how the committee arrived at their decisions:
*They were under the influence of illicit substances and/or cash bribes
*They selected teams who were conventionally believed to be “out” just to flip off the Bracketology beat writers
*They picked teams out of a hat at random

I don’t pretend to know they chose the teams they chose, but there are teams (BC probably not one of them) who have legitimate gripes in my estimation.

Oh well, it’s hockey playoff time!
