Monday bubble rooting interests & resume update

Today, Boston College fans (and any college basketball fans of bubble teams) are interested in seeing the following teams win:

*Old Dominion. All along, the CAA has been forecast as a two-bid conference: George Mason and Old Dominion. Most people thought that that would, indeed, be the CAA finals matchup tonight, until the Patriots grabbed their ankles against the Virginia Commonwealth Rams. Normally, this wouldn’t be worrisome, except for the fact that VCU would steal a bid from a bubble team by winning, since neither George Mason nor Old Dominion will be out of the field of 68. What’s even worse is that VCU has played themselves onto the fringe of being a bubble team themselves. I have nothing against this fine institution, but a three-bid CAA would hurt BC’s interests quite a bit, so VCU delenda est. Feel free to root for the Monarchs on ESPN at 7pm.

That’s the only one today, actually. I’ve been asked on Twitter about the Gonzaga/St. Mary’s matchup tonight in the WCC, but I do not think that is of any real importance to us. Most believed that the WCC would be a two-bid conference, and with Gonzaga surviving San Francisco last night, it’s certain to be one now. It does not matter which team wins, because both are securely in the tournament.

Moving on, check on the resume tracker at the top of the page, updated to include yesterday’s Wake Forest win. As I figured, the RPI took a slight drop, but the SOS took a sizable drop, and will do so again even if the Eagles beat the Deacs on Thursday. While it’s certainly not a good thing, there are two things to keep in perspective: a) the Eagles’ RPI and SOS will still be in a good position relative to the other bubble teams after Wake Part Deux, assuming BC wins, and b) playing Clemson (and hopefully beyond in Greensboro) will recover a little bit of ground that BC lost playing Wake twice. For now, we’re still in decent shape, but everything is subject to change.

This is going to be a tense week, so stay tuned.
