BC 7, Northeastern 6 — Three out of four ain’t bad

Dare we call it a Beanpot dynasty? Maybe, maybe not, but whatever the case, the Boston College Eagles are going to hoist that small trophy yet again, successfully defending their 2010 title by defeating the Northeastern Huskies, 7-6 in overtime. This tournament was reminiscent of 2008, my senior year at BC, when both Boston College victories were overtime games. Like the 2008 championship game, this one was also high-scoring.

There were far too many goals and penalties to break down each and every one, so I’ll say this: Northeastern was far, far better offensively than I thought they would be. BC was also far, far worse defensively than I thought they would be. You knew Northeastern was going to bring it, seeing as how they’re on an embarrassing 23-year run (now to be 24), but BC had an answer for everything, and here we are again.

For this team, who are the unanimous #1 in the country now, this Beanpot title was just step one of many on the way to their ultimate goal: repeating as national champions. It’s going to be a fun ride.

As an aside, it was a miserable day for those folk down Commonwealth Avenue: not only did they watch BC just win back-to-back Beanpots tonight, but they lost their own consolation game against a 4-18-1 Harvard team. I was a little surprised that BU was still ranked this week; they sure as hell won’t be next week.

Now we get to see NU two more times in succession coming up this weekend. Somehow I doubt those games will have the same energy.
