All I want for my birthday is a win over BU

OK, I want money and ice cream cake, too.

Still, that can’t be too much to ask, right? After all, the #1 Boston College Eagles are the defending Beanpot champions, they are undefeated against the Boston University Terriers this season, and just played some dominant hockey against UMass on Friday. All of this will be riding into the TD Garden with the Eagles tonight in the prime-time (8pm) matchup.

The Terriers haven’t been terrible this season, sitting at 13-7-7, but they haven’t been up to BC’s level, either. Even with just 13 wins to this point, BU ended last week with a #14 national ranking, having most recently beaten UMass Lowell and going 3-0-1 in their last four games. Their last loss, in case you were wondering, was to Boston College.

I can’t picture a BC/BU game that isn’t competitive, particularly when it’s in the Beanpot. As mentioned previously, the Eagles have won all three meetings with the Terriers this year, but the final margins have gotten closer and closer each time. Could this be the time BU breaks through, sticking it to their Comm Ave rivals on one of the biggest stages in college hockey? Of course it’s possible, but you simply have to have faith in this team and their ability to win the big games. Sure, this one doesn’t even count in the Hockey East standings, but they’ve won two of the last three Beanpots (not to mention, two of the last three national titles). This is nowhere Jerry York and his guys haven’t been before, so I’d expect a calm and confident Eagles team to go into the Garden and play their best.

This will doubtlessly be the hottest game going in the Beanpot; in a way, it’s too bad that it has to be in the semifinals. Last year, we were treated to an exciting BC victory over BU in the finals. With any luck, the Eagles can replicate that magic and move into the title game yet again.
