Hokies/Eagles: Don’t win it for your March hopes

…win it for yourselves, Boston College. Win it for yourselves.

Right now, you’re on a three-game losing streak, falling to each of the ACC’s best teams by double digits. Your average margin of defeat in those three games was 21.3 points. Aside from a select few, your players look like they’ve checked out, your coaching has been ineffective, and your defense has been worthy of Division 3.

As a team, you look defeated, lifeless, and moribund. You’ve proven all of your detractors right about you. Most importantly, you look every bit like a team that won’t be participating in meaningful basketball in mid-March.

Forget about the NCAA Tournament. Hell, forget about the ACC Tournament. Play to win on Saturday. Do it to prove that you still have a little Boston College pride. Do it to prove that you still have personal pride and that you haven’t quit. There’s no shame in losing, even, but losing as badly as BC has and as consistently, particularly on Tuesday at home against North Carolina, is not acceptable.

Things might work out, and they might not, but we want to see effort. We Boston College fans could get behind a team that loses but plays their hearts out every night, but not one that goes on cruise control and promptly gets crushed in their own gym in a crucial game. If the ship is to be righted, it must happen quickly and it must be a team effort. Whatever the case, if Boston College tries their best against Virginia Tech, at least it will be an improvement.

Hopefully, at 1pm tomorrow, we will see that improvement.
