Searching for Boston College Football recruiting news is about as challenging as trying to find a hard copy of the Star Wars Holiday Special. The recruiting shake up that happened when the Eagles terminated Frank Spaziani’s contract and picked up Coach Addazio has seen 3 star recruits like QB Tim Boyle, WR Dan Monteroso, RB LeShun Daniels and highly rated K Michael Geiger. Since then, Addazio has only added dual threat QB James Walsh and Syracuse transfer TE Louis Addazio(his son).

And with the mighty defections comes limited interest in Boston College in the run up to National Signing Day. But through tireless research we at Soaring to Glory have found two exemplary prospects looking at Boston College.

1.Robert Davis-RB-3-star-ESPN

This is a 5’8 running back out of Carrollwood Day School in Tampa, Florida, who only came onto Boston College’s recruiting radar since Coach Addazio was hired. Davis was previously committed to play for Cincinnati until Butch Jones left to coach at Tennessee. Davis wasn’t thrilled with new coach Tommy Tuberville’s pitch and explored new options.

Mike Bakas of Scout.com on Davis, before his senior season:

Davis lacks ideal size but he flat out dominated the small school competition on the field last season. He’s very good in the open field with speed and the ability to make people miss. He’s also a top notch kick return specialist who scored a few times there, too. He’s a playmaker on both sides of the ball and should be ready for a big senior season.

Robert Davis would be a great pick up in Boston College’s underwhelming recruiting season, but there are a couple of other competitors in the Davis chase. According to Joey Knight of the Tampa Bay Times, Davis’ father, Derrick Brown, says that while BC is in the top two for his son, “‘Memphis is probably ahead right now’”. Knight also points out that the RB prospect still has USF is still in his mind, as well.

If Memphis, a Conference USA team that is looking forward to their move to the Big East in the fall, is able to pry away the Eagles biggest prospect on National Signing Day, I don’t think we have much hope for the foreseeable future

2. Matt Patchan-OT-possible Florida transfer

The redshirt junior offensive tackle who hasn’t played since 2011 is a former 5 star prospect mired by injuries, brought to Gainesville by Urban Meyer and coached by Steve Addazio. Patchan now wants to enroll as a graduate student and play off his final year for one of his former coaches at either Ohio State or Boston College. Since the The Gainesville Times reported the story on December 26th, not much else has developed concerning Patchan’s decision. We certainly hope that if Patachan is physically able, he will be able to come to the Heights, as we are losing John Wetzel and Emmett Cleary to graduation.

Update: Boston College just received a new commitment!

From Syracuse’s ABC affiliate:

Baldwinsville football standout Tyler Rouse will soon be Boston College Eagle…In December, Rouse was named the 2012-2013 Gatorade Player of the Year…This past season, Rouse rushed for 2,977 yards and 45 touchdowns on 333 carries, leading the Baldwinsville Bees to the Class AA Section III final. He finished his high school career with 6,841 yards rushing, the fourth-highest total in New York State history.

Those certainly look like some impressive statistics and we hope Tyler can bring that production to the Heights in the Fall. Congratulations Tyler!!

Ever since his hire in early December, new Boston College Head Coach Steve Addazio has been promised a renewed running game with dynamic tailback play and a dual threat passer. Before today, the only recruit that Coach Addazio has been able to add to the class is a Syracuse tight end who shares the same last name. But, today Addazio’s got his man in 3 Star QB, James Walsh, an Ohio de-commit.
Here are some of the highlights from ESPN’s scouting report:

Walsh is a very productive dual threat quarterback who primarily moves the ball with his arm but is a very capable runner, showing the quickness and playing speed to rip off big chunks of yardage when executing the zone read play or forced to scramble out of the pocket….This guy knows where to go with the ball and if pressured, has the foot quickness and agility needed to slide and keep the ball alive….We see very good accuracy throwing short, medium and deep routes, hitting receivers on time and in stride. Is dangerous when forced out of the pocket, getting his eyes downfield while locating receivers on the move….Walsh has the qualities we look for when evaluating quarterbacks; with time to develop his skills we see BCS potential.

James is the third QB in the 2013 class alongside fellow 3 star QB Tim Boyle and 2 star Mackay Lowrie. It will be interesting to see if either of the other quarterbacks, both pocket passers, will seek out other options with Coach Addazio’s commitment to the ground and pound offense.

Anyways, we at Soaring to Glory whole-heartedly welcome James Walsh to the Heights.

And if that commitment didn’t get you excited enough, well that’s too bad for now. According to ESPN, RB Raphael Webb was supposed to be choosing between BC, Florida Atlantic and Minnesota this morning at 8:30, along with his teammate Keith Kelsey Jr.(Kentucky, Louisville, South Florida). But Webb is delaying his decision till further notice. But seriously, why wouldn’t Webb choose BC over Florida Atlantic and Minnesota????

Hingle-US PRESSWIRE

The piece of crystal known as the Coaches’ Trophy is the most coveted object in college football. Up until now with the BCS, how said object has been won has been the subject of a great deal of scrutiny, but the end is near.

The fans appear to finally be getting what they wanted: a college football playoff. Is it the one we wanted, however?

That is impossible to know right now, because all the details are not yet in place, but there is a basic idea. The long and short of it is that we’ll have a “seeded four-team playoff” and those teams will be decided by a selection committee. Brett McMurphy describes succinctly where we’re headed:

That model [preferred by the commissioners], multiple sources told CBSSports.com, would be the “best four teams” chosen by a selection committee with the committee putting emphasis on conference champions.

Everyone who follows college football on a regular basis is aware that a playoff was on its way, but there are a lot of elements that must be considered here, both with regards to Boston College football’s place in the mix and the FBS structure as a whole.

I don’t need to tell any Boston College fans that we won’t be competing for a national championship any time soon, and probably not by 2014, either, so this story has little immediate relevance to us on that front. What it could also mean, however, is that the superconfrapocalypse is nigh. Might we be looking at the advent of four repulsively titanic football conferences which totally run the show? It’s possible.

Then there’s also the matter of what happens to the rest of the bowl system. I would imagine it’ll stay in place as is, because it’s far too big of a cash cow for the commishes to jettison.

Watch for the details to come out in the months to follow.

As a Boston College fan, you also know that this is the first time in over a decade where you won’t be seeing your Eagles in it, and God only knows when you’ll see them playing in a bowl game that is of actual consequence.

Let’s act under the assumption that you are, in fact, still planning on watching some college football over the season and into the new year. (I personally will be watching much more NFL, as my team is in the playoff mix, but that’s me.) You may be wondering what some of the best games are for you to watch, and there are a few in particular which stand out. (more…)
