Boston College Roadmap to Bowl Eligibility: The Write-Offs

The games in this column are “gravy,” in the sense that gravy is an added bonus if it is present. Anti-gravy activists may substitute the garnish of their choice but nevertheless, these are the games Boston College probably will not win and as such we are willing to write them off for now.

Those contests are USC, Virginia Tech, and Florida State.

The Trojans game last season was a complete disaster, but this one is on the East Coast. With that said, there looked to be a real talent mismatch, particularly as USC dismantled what was otherwise a very good Boston College offensive line and smothered the offense in general all afternoon. Now, with a semi-competent coach in University Park, it could be another grind.

Eagles fans remember how the Hokies fell at Boston College last season, marking the maroon and gold’s first win over Virginia Tech since 2008. Yet, this game is in Blacksburg in 2014, and the Eagles have done precisely zip down there since Matty Ice found Andre Callender in the end zone in 2007. This is not the Virginia Tech of a few years ago but the Eagles will be big underdogs.

Finally, Florida State should speak for itself. Boston College played a very admirable game at Alumni Stadium against the eventual national champions in 2013, but this one’s in Tallahassee. Probably not happening.

Now, let’s proceed on to the real battleground – the games somewhere in the middle.
