Boston College Football Countdown: 49 Days to Go

We’re clear of the halfway mark and there are now only 49 days left on the countdown to the 2013 Boston College Eagles football season. Happy happy, joy joy.

Who Wears 49 Now

Greg M. Cooper-USA TODAY SportsSteele Divitto, LB, senior

Divitto is entering his senior season at Boston College after having established himself as one of the best linebackers on the team. Last year, he was second on the Eagles with 92 tackles while he led the team with four fumble recoveries. For his maroon and gold career, Divitto has amassed 184 tackles (99 solo) and is virtually guaranteed to be the starting Sam linebacker once again in 2013.

Notables Who Wore 49

Mark Palmer, FB, 2004-06. Utah transfer who started at fullback for three years.
Terence Wiggins, SS, 1992-95. Returned a fumble against Hokies.

Sounds Like A Lot, But…

Boston College converted on third downs last season 49 times — out of 163, which was a 30% rate. That was second to last in FBS.

Stretching the Field

Alex Amidon’s season-long catch last season was a 49-yarder from Chase Rettig against Clemson. Surprisingly, that was not a touchdown catch, but he did have a 31-yard touchdown and a 42-yard touchdown reception in that game.

Danger Zone

Opponents were in the Eagles’ red zone 49 times last season, and cashed in 40 of those times for an 81.6% rate.

Personal Achievement

In ’49, FB/K Ed Petela set a Boston College record for points in a single game that still stands today. He scored 34 against Holy Cross, scoring four touchdowns and kicking ten extra points. Yes, the game was as ugly as it sounds: BC won 76-0, the biggest margin of victory in program history.
