Boston College Football Countdown: 52 Days to Go

BC Football: 52 Days to Go

The good news is that there are only 52 days left until the start of the Boston College Eagles football season in 2013. The bad news is that there are 52 days left.

Who Wears 52 Now

Steven Daniels, LB, sophomore

Here’s another fine linebacker from the St. X pipeline. Daniels had the curious distinction of being the prized recruit in two classes. He was first intended to join the Eagles in the entry class of 2011, but he had to spend a year out in Worcester Academy getting on the good side of the admission folks in Devlin Hall. Once he was able to do that, this talented young linebacker came to Chestnut Hill in time for the 2012 season.

There was no sense in redshirting him after he already fell a year back at Worcester, so he played in 2012 as a true freshman. In ten games, he made 25 tackles.

Notables Who Wore 52

Tony DiNatale, QB/P, 1935-37. BC Varsity Club Hall of Fame inductee in 1992.
Joe McKenney, QB, 1923-26. Also went 44-18-3 as head coach; entered the CFB Hall as an official.
Austin Giles, DE, 2006-09. 99 tackles in 51 games with the Eagles.
Mike Siravo, LB, 1995-97. Also a former assistant coach at BC.
Scott Harrington, DT, 1981-84. 1984 team captain.

Random Fact

The Eagles’ longest passing play in 2012 was a 52-yard strike to Johnathan Coleman against Wake Forest. It was not, however, a touchdown.

Random Fact #2

Defensive back Justin Simmons recorded 52 tackles last season, leading all freshman players on the team.

Random Fact #3

Opponents scored red zone touchdowns against the Eagles last season at a 52% rate. The Eagles themselves converted at only a 41% rate.

Random Fact #4

The first field goal attempt missed in 2012 by Nate Freese was a 52-yarder against Georgia Tech. It was the longest try he took all season, and he would only miss one more kick the rest of the way.
