Boston College Football Countdown: 64 Days to Go

facebooktwitterreddit

One more day comes off the board and now we’re left with 64 days until the start of the college football season. It looks like a much less daunting number than what we had, say, a month ago.

Who Wears 64 Now

Harris Williams, OL, junior

Williams is a junior from Lynn who came to BC in 2010, redshirted, played in seven games in his first year, and just two last year. He missed all that time because he broke his foot during the preseason, having to make his 2012 debut a month and a half into the season against Florida State.

He was not on the two-deep by last season’s end.

Notables Who Wore 64

Tom Nalen, C, 1990-93. 5-time Pro Bowl center for Broncos.
Karl Swanke, OT, 1977-79. Played 7 years in the NFL for Green Bay.
Joe Wolf, OG, 1985-88. 1988 team captain; spent 9 seasons with Arizona Cardinals.
Keith Leavitt, OT, 2000-03. Started 24 games for BC.

Until We Meet Again

In ’64, the Eagles defeated #9 Syracuse in a last-minute thriller of a season opener. Tom Coughlin played for the vanquished Orangemen.

That ’64 team, by the way, ended up having a 6-3 season — one of those losses came the following week as they lost to, you guessed it, Army.

Complete

Two great receivers from Boston College’s past, Rich Gunnell and Gerard Phelan, each had seasons in which they record career highs in receptions at 64. For Gunnell, it was the high-flying 2007 season, while for Phelan, well, one of those 64 came in Miami as time expired in 1984.

Random Fact

Last season, Nick Clancy had 64 combined tackles, which lead the Eagles. So too did he lead the team in overall tackles with 145.
