Boston College Football Countdown: 71 Days to Go

facebooktwitterreddit

Today may be the first day of summer, but the boys of Fall are hard at work getting ready for another Boston College Eagles football season. There are now just 71 days remaining until August 31 and the Boston College-Villanova game.

Who Wears 71 Now

Dan Lembke, OL, sophomore

Lembke is an offensive lineman from Illinois who made his way briefly into seven games during his redshirt freshman season. He was a three-sport athlete in high school who won several local and regional accolades for his play before being recruited at BC. By the end of the 2012 season, Lembke had cracked the two-deep and was the backup at left tackle behind Emmett Cleary. Since Cleary is gone, it is possible that he may see even more time there now.

Notables Who Wore 71

Tom Marinelli, OT, 1971-74. Cleveland Browns draft pick in 1975.
Mark Nori, OL, 1993-96. Actually coached in the XFL; became a high school head coach.
Dave Nugent, DT, 1984-87. 1987 team captain; New England draft pick in 1988.
Leo Bell, OT, 2000-02. Photographs well after beating Notre Dame.

Let There Be Light

As part of an Alumni Stadium renovation in ’71, the stadium was expanded to 32,000 and lights were added so that there may be night games. Meanwhile, 42 years later, the baseball field still doesn’t have them.

Random Fact

Will Blackmon’s career long for punt yardage in a play is 71 yards, which he gained in 2004 against West Virginia. Hey, I remember that game.

Random Fact #2

Boston College allowed 71 yards against Houston in 1962, which is the second-best total defense mark in a single game in program history. Nope, wasn’t alive for that game.

Random Fact #3

Florida State ran 71 offensive plays against Boston College in their 2012 meeting. BC ran six fewer, but got 44 fewer points. Unfortunately, I remember this game as well.
