Boston College will have players on nine of the 16 teams in the National Hockey League’s postseason field when the playoffs begin on Tuesday. Patrick Eaves’ Detroit Red Wings snatched one of the final remaining berths on Saturday, but Cam Atkinson and his Columbus Blue Jackets will be out.

The Blue Jackets won their season finale, 3-1, over the Nashville Predators on Saturday night, but they did not control their own destiny. Detroit won their way in to the Stanley Cup playoffs with a solid week, while all the Minnesota Wild needed to do was win one game to snatch a bid, and they earned it with a 3-1 win over former Eagle Chuck Kobasew’s Colorado Avalanche.

Atkinson came up big for Columbus in the past two must-win games, notching three goals and a total of four points.
